Full details of Byre Cottage are given Below
Built
of the local red
sandstone, Byre Cottage is
part of a barn
conversion completed
in late 1994. Set in
the beautiful and peaceful Eden Valley but within easy reach of Penrith
and the M6, (4 miles), it is the ideal base for exploring the Lake
District (Ullswater 8 miles, and the Northern fells 20 minutes drive). The
Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and the Scottish Borders are also very accessible. But
'on the doorstep' is the charm and tranquillity of
the Vale of Eden - known as England's 'Best Kept Secret'.
Langwathby
literally means 'river crossing' and there was once a ford across the River Eden
at this point. It is on the A686 which has been recognised as one of the
twelve best drives in the world, travelling up and over the northern Pennines
with magnificent views. The stone bridge which replaced the ford was swept away
during a storm in 1968. The bailey bridge built as a 'temporary' replacement is
still in use and is now recorded in the Guinness Book of Records!
The
cottage is set in a courtyard and is close to the village centre. It derives
it's name from the fact that it was at one time a cow byre. But we can assure
prospective guests that there is no longer any evidence of the previous four
footed inhabitants and we are confident the cottage will provide all the
comforts of home.
This single storey cottage is ideal for two people. The charming and comfortable sitting room has a French window leading out into the small enclosed garden. A multi fuel stove provides extra heating in winter months although there are storage heaters throughout to provide adequate warmth. A colour T.V / video recorder and radio-cassette are provided and there are ample books, maps etc. on the immediate area and the Lake District in general.
The
dining kitchen leads from the sitting room and is fully equipped with ample
crockery and cooking utensils, oven and hob, microwave/grill, fridge, washing
machine and dishwasher. An ironing board and iron is also provided. (There is a
tumble dryer in the garage). A door leads into an inner hallway off which is the
bathroom (bath with shower over, wash hand basin and toilet). A further door
opens into a very pleasant bedroom which has ample storage facilities. All linen
is provided, including towels and the bed is made up prior to your arrival.
There
is a garage adjacent to the cottage with additional parking alongside. Well
behaved dogs are welcome by prior arrangement but we do ask for payment of fifty
pence per paw per week. We also ask that you do not leave your dog in the
cottage unattended.
The
village has a pub which is temporarily closed, the nearest is 1 mile away. and an excellent shop/off licence/post office. There are many
other good pubs and restaurants in
the area. Langwathby is on the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway and the station is
just a few minutes walk away.
The
cottage is let on a Friday - Friday basis but shorter lets are sometimes
possible, particularly in the winter months.
